Engaging Older New Brunswick Adults in Brain Health Research Study
About the study
Our Engaging Older New Brunswick Adults in Brain Health Research study aims to identify factors that make it easier — or harder — for older adults in New Brunswick to access brain health and wellness programs in the province.
NB-PALM researchers collaborated with community partners to develop a short survey asking participants about their thoughts on brain health, staying healthy as they age, and the best ways to learn about and participate in programs that support health and wellness. Participants could complete the survey in English or French online, by mail, or by telephone.
Using participant feedback, we hoped to better understand:
1) How do we reach the people in the community who would benefit the most from brain health supports and interventions?
2) What are the best ways to engage older adults in lifestyle changes that will be effective?
3) What are the barriers and enablers to establishing such programs in multiple regions in the province and across a linguistically diverse population?
Between June to November 2022, any older adult (ages 60 and over) living in New Brunswick was invited to complete the survey. Two-hundred and forty-five participants completed the survey.
It’s important to note that the final sample is only two-thirds of our goal needed for analysis and did not lead to a sample representative of the older adult population in New Brunswick. While the results presented in visuals and reports are descriptive and cannot be generalized, they can be used as a starting point to guide future conversations and program planning. To be a successful program for all involved, it should be designed in equal partnership with the people representing future program participants.
